Insectary Technician

If you are fit and able, want to work in horticulture and are interested in sustainable plant protection, then we would like to hear from you. We are looking to hire an Insectary Technician to assist with the production of one or several of our beneficial organisms. This is a full time 40 hour role working a standard week, with occasional weekend work covering staff leave as well as stat days.

As the largest producer of beneficial plant protection invertebrates in the county, the position requires a focused and hardworking individual with good time management skills and the ability to work efficiently in unsupervised roles. Much of the work occurs within a heated glasshouse environment or outside. We have a multicultural team and are looking for a real team player.

This is a horticultural position with an insect twist. The position does involve a significant amount of manual labour, so a good level of fitness and health is required. On the job training will be given for more technical requirements. We operate over several sites and it is essential that all applicants hold a full clean driver's license and must be able to confidently and competently operate manual vehicles, this will be tested as part of an interview. Horticultural experience and qualifications such as GrowSafe certification are preferred but not essential.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Assistance with plant husbandry
    • Potting of plants
    • Scouting for and controlling of pest populations
    • Monitoring of plant health
  • Assistance with insect/mite production systems
    • Diet preparation and feeding
    • Preparation of plants for insect production lines
      • Washing of plants, de-leafing, removal of any unwanted organisms
      • Moving large plants between growing areas
    • Harvesting of organisms and preparation and packaging for sale
  • Cleaning and maintenance duties
    • Cleaning of rearing containers, plant pots and trays with disinfectants
    • Cleaning of production areas with high pressure water-blasters
    • Removal of waste, and general cleaning duties around the property
Sole charge of the production of a beneficial organism may be given to the successful candidate at a later date and at the full discretion of management.

The position will report to the Insectary Manager and any other staff member designated by management. The successful applicant will be taken on under a 90 day trial period.
