Weekend Insectary Technician

If you have an interest in horticulture, want to work weekends, and are passionate about sustainable plant protection, then we would like to hear from you. We are looking to hire a Weekend Insectary Technician to assist with the production of our beneficial organisms. This is a part time role doing weekend work, with potential for covering staff leave during the week if available.

The job will be based in Karaka, but also requires travel to Bombay. 7-8 hours work on Saturday and Sunday. The position is available now.


As the largest producer of beneficial invertebrates in the county, the position requires a focused and hard working individual with good time management skills and the ability to work efficiently in unsupervised roles. Much of the work occurs within a heated glasshouse environment.

The position involves a significant amount of manual labour, and on the job training will be given for more technical requirements. We operate over several sites and it is essential that all applicants hold a full clean drivers license and are ideally able to confidently operate manual vehicles. The successful applicant will be fit and able, reliable and with a can do attitude. Horticultural qualifications and experience preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Assistance with plant husbandry
    • Potting of plants
    • Scouting for and controlling of pest populations
    • Monitoring of plant health
  • Assistance with insect/mite production systems
    • Food preparation and feeding
    • Preparation of plants for insect production lines
      • Washing of plants, removal of any unwanted organisms
      • De-leafing and removal of lateral growth
      • Moving plants between growing areas
    • Harvesting of organisms, preparation and packaging for sale
  • Cleaning and maintenance duties
    • Cleaning of rearing containers, plant pots and trays with disinfectants
    • Cleaning of production areas with high pressure water-blasters
    • Removal of waste, and general cleaning duties around the property
The position will report to the manager and any other staff member designated by management. The successful applicant will be taken on under a 90 day trial period.
